The All New Rolls-Royce Ghost

The All New Rolls-Royce

GHOST

In my experience, the features that truly make a Rolls-Royce stand out are the hidden petit luxures that surround your experience of the car — they don’t shout, they whisper.

Synonymous with the ethereal spirit like names given to the cars themselves, these features add to the mysterious legend, the fairy-tale that is Rolls-Royce. This legend continues with the all new Rolls-Royce Ghost, a fresh reinterpretation of the bestselling Rolls-Royce in its 116-year history.

The premise? To birth a vehicle suited for a changing perception of super-luxury —‘Post Opulence’ they called it internally. These are Ghost owners, people more than acutely aware of something that is common-place in recent times ‘premium mediocracy’; a term coined by the fashion cognoscenti referring to products featuring superficial treatments, such as overtly conspicuous branding.

“To create a new product that would resonate with our GHOST clients for the next ten years meant we had to listen carefully to their demands. Today we set new standards in customer centricity by creating a completely new motor car for a unique group of Rolls-Royce’s clients. These business leaders and entrepreneurs demand more of their GHOST than ever. They require a new type of super-luxury saloon that is dynamic, serenely comfortable and perfect in its minimalism. GHOST is this product.”

_Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

This is the all new Ghost and things have changed. Now built on the bespoke Rolls-Royce Aluminium Spaceframe Architecture (used in the recent Phantom VIII and Cullinan SUV) the Ghost has been rebuilt from the ground up with the only components carried over from the previous edition Ghost being the Spirit of Ecstasy and the umbrellas. The famed Magic carpet ride has been augmented and embellished through an evolution of the marque’s double-wishbone suspension and the addition of the Upper Wishbone Damper — never before applied to a production vehicle.

The interior is pared back, with more minimal stitching and open pore veneers giving the overall visage a cleaner more modern feel. The main embellishment coming in the form of the glowing LEDs illuminating the dashboard on the passenger side, and the starlight headliner giving ambient light from above.

However as aforementioned, it’s the more “hidden” innovations that truly brings a Rolls-Royce into its own and this new Ghost is no exception. Not only does the door feature their signature self-closing option, but a power assisted opening function, activated by pulling the interior door handle. Rather than have a completely silent interior, a new formula for Serenity was created; a subtle note to overcome the disorienting experience of true silence. This was no mean feat as it required every component in the car to be tuned to share a common resonant frequency.

Another hidden embellishment, the Ghost’s new Micro-Environment Purification System (MEPS) channels all cabin air through a nanofleece filter, hence purifying the air and capable of removing nearly all ultra-fine particles in less than 2 minutes.

The outer shell itself is minimal yet distinctive; the perfect canvas for the imagination of the Rolls-Royce community. You can be as creative or as stark as you desire. The overall result is an aesthetic for a new generation of Rolls-Royce Ghost owners, crafted with the foresight of a decade in advance.
