Rad.io Vol 1
by Ashley Henry
We begin with ‘Vol 1 by Ashley Henry’. The British jazz musician is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and heralds from South London. Inspired by his Caribbean heritage and wave of jazz musicians from the 1950’s – he has gone on to perform and collaborate with the likes of Jason Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Jean Toussaint to name a few. He is part of a new generation of musicians that have been raised with a wide range of influences with his music segueing from idyllic funky anecdotes to melodic piano segments with ease. This style takes shape in his debut album ‘Beautiful Vinyl Hunter’ a project that is both full of character yet distinctively British.
Noting the city around him his playlist focusses entirely on London talent. Featuring the fresh reality of Loyle Carner and hybrid poetry of Kojey Radical – it is filled with songs that celebrate the London accent with every line. His own song ‘Colors’ feat Joshua Idehen is testament to this ideal alongside the more soulful juxtapositions of artist like Ego Ella May and Yazmin Lacey.
A soulful playlist.
